The late Sabu Shake, Sr. was a hands-on restaurateur who founded Old Fisherman’s Grotto in 1950. Now celebrating its 75th Anniversary, The Grotto continues to be a Monterey fl agship, along with the addition of The Fish Hopper, The Grotto Fish Market & The Fish Hopper in Kona, Hawaii. Today, Sabu’s sons Chris & Sabu J.R. continue in their father’s footsteps. They pride themselves on still serving local, sustainable seafood and fresh local produce.

Giving Back To Our Community
From a young age we learned the importance of giving back to the community, beginning with watching our parents help those in need and feeding the homeless. Currently, our restaurants are proud to support over 300 local non-profi t groups each year.
To date, our events Sabu Safari Gala, Holiday Drive and Turkey Drive have raised over $6.9 million dollars to support The Salvation Army of the Monterey Peninsula, in memory of Sabu Shake Sr.’s legacy of giving. We honor our uniformed military and veterans at all of our restaurants, with a complimentary appetizer, dessert and a flag placed on their table in recognition of their service.
